SHELTER Book Art Exhibit.....................................................Curated by: Veronica Morgan

My attraction to the subject of shelter- home, housing, personal space, safe haven- originates with a life-long involvement in the built environment; first, as an institutional planner in Boston architectural firms, and later as a developer working in historic restoration. Each time I have renovated another home for myself (and there have been many), I have realized anew how fortunate I am to enjoy the privilege and pleasure of “homemaking”. At the same time, the building experience is a poignant reminder of the vast segment of humanity who survives day to day without housing. According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, “Every year 600,000 families with 1.35 million children experience homelessness in the US.”

One of my favorite books is Gaston Bachelard’s Poetics of Space. “The house shelters dreaming” is perhaps his most oft-quoted observation. How do you dream if you have no shelter? In conceiving this exhibit, I hoped to call attention to the subject of homelessness and, through the sale of book works, support a housing charity chosen by the director at each exhibiting venue.

The Boston North Shore Film Festival's 2008 Earth Day Film Series

Film: THE UNFORESEEN
Thursday, April 17 @ 7:30pm
Cost: $8.00, $6.00 seniors (60+) and students, available at theatre box office

- An ambitious west Texas farm boy with grandiose plans tires of living at the mercy of nature and sets out to find a life with more control. He heads to Austin where he becomes a real estate developer and skillfully capitalizes on the growth of this 1970s boomtown. At the peak of his powers, he transforms 4,000 acres of pristine Hill Country into one of the state’s largest and fastest selling subdivisions. When the development threatens a local treasure, a fragile limestone aquifer and a naturally spring-fed swimming hole, the community fights back. In the conflict that ensues, we see in miniature a struggle that today plays out in communities across the country. Featuring interviews with Robert Redford, Willie Nelson, the iconic Texas Governor Ann Richards, environmentalist Wendell Berry and many others, The Unforeseen is a powerful meditation on the American Dream – on the destruction of the natural world as it falls victim to the cannibalizing forces of unchecked development. It is an intricate tale of personal hopes, victories and failures; and of debates over land, water and the public good.

The Boston North Shore Film Festival's
2008 Earth Day Film Series

Film: SHARKWATER
Friday, April 18 @ 7:30pm
Cost: FREE! (as a sort of "Welcome April Vacation" event)

- For filmmaker Rob Stewart, exploring sharks began as an underwater adventure. What it turned into was a beautiful and dangerous life journey into the balance of life on earth. Driven by passion fed from a lifelong fascination with sharks, Stewart debunks historical stereotypes and media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty, man-eating monsters and reveals the reality of sharks as pillars in the evolution of the seas. Filmed in visually stunning, high definition video, Sharkwater takes you into the most shark rich waters of the world, exposing the exploitation and corruption surrounding the world's shark populations in the marine reserves of Cocos Island, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador. In an effort to protect sharks, Stewart teams up with renegade conservationist Paul Watson of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.

Film: KING CORN
Saturday, April 19 @ 7:30pm
Cost: $8.00, $6.00 seniors (60+) and students, available at theatre box office

- Almost everything Americans eat contains corn: high fructose corn syrup, corn-fed meat, and corn-based processed foods are the staples of the modern diet.  Ready for an adventure and alarmed by signs of their generation’s bulging waistlines, college friends Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis know where to go to investigate.  Eighty years ago, Ian and Curt’s great-grandfathers lived just a few miles apart, in the same rural county in northern Iowa. Now their great-grandsons are returning with a mission:  they will plant an acre of corn, follow their harvest into the world, and attempt to understand what they — and all of us — are really made of.

Film: RADIANT CITY
Sunday, April 20 @ 7:30pm
Cost: $8.00, $6.00 seniors (60+) and students, available at theatre box office

- Something's happening on the edge of town. There's a desperate housewife in the parking lot, a musical chorus line mowing the lawn - and a loaded gun in the upstairs closet. Welcome to Radiant City, an entertaining and startling new film on 21st century suburbanites.

How Diane Arbus Got Her Freak On.
By Malcolm Jones. Newsweek Web Exclusive. March 27, 2008

HUBERT'S FREAKS and it's the story of Bob Langmuir, a gifted but troubled antiquarian book dealer whose headlong pursuit of the archive of a Times Square freak show leads him to the discovery of a trove of hitherto unknown photographs by the great American photographer Diane Arbus. Also in the archive are the notes and dream journals of Charlie Lucas, an African-American performance artist who ran the freak show (it was call ed Hubert's Museum) in the 1950s and 60s. The discovery so excites Bob that he commences an affair with Arbus, and a soul-communion with Lucas, even though both had been dead for decades. When he is released from the Behavioral Health Evaluation Unit he resolves to redeem himself and his discovery by taking it into New York's high-end art world. What follows is both a spiritual journey and a fresh look at the business of art.

HUBERT'S FREAKS, published by Harcourt at $24, is available in book stores and online - from Amazon, and all the usual internet outlets. Signed or inscribed copies can be purchased for $30 postpaid from me at tenpound@shore.net

Our website - hubertsfreaks.com - features video, interviews, photographs of freaks and other characters not seen in the book, reviews, events, my "freakspeak" blog, and a streaming audio of Charlie Lucas 1965 "Grind Tape" a real Times Square pitchman's spiel, as he tries to drawn customers into Hubert's Museum.
