Our new feature
In many ways, seARTS' mission is much like ours here at the newspaper: to provide news on Cape Ann that resonates with local readers. The Society for the Encouragement of the Arts has built a foundation for arts and culture on Cape Ann. It covers all disciplines of art, from painting, sculpture, culinary and graphic arts to theater, writing, architecture and dance.
But its mission goes beyond giving paintbrushes to artists. The nonprofit organization, which has more than 100 members, recognizes the importance of a thriving arts and cultural community. It sees the economic benefits of a strong cultural environment. It strives to link artists and art organizations to each other, patrons, sponsors and tourists.
There is no better natural setting than Cape Ann for artists to flourish. Its history, pure geographic beauty and strong sense of community make it a perfect venue for artists. As its executive director, Susan Erony, once said, "The more we inspire and support each other, the healthier our cultural community can be."
Today, the Times begins a regular feature highlighting the work of seARTS artists and artists who contribute to seARTs. We trust it's a good marriage for Cape Ann.
